Colombia – The Next Big Tourist Destination
For many years, tourists and visitors have been avoiding visiting Colombia. This have been because of the stereotypes, the media reputation and the countries troublesome past. But all that has changed in the past 5 years. In 2017, Lonely Planet ranked Colombia as one of the top destinations to visit this year.
Awards
Colombia’s past has overshadowed it’s present. Colombia is now a thriving and heavily developing country. Medellin, the countries second biggest city, has been awarded the most innovative city of the year award in 2013. Along with a large number of other awards and recognitions, with 2016’s peace process the country is stepping up it’s tourist game.
What Colombia has to offer?
Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world after Brazil. Home to Caribbean beaches, islands, a Pacific coastline, the Amazon rainforest, deserts, flat plains and the Andes mountains range. In fact, Colombia has it all.
Cartagena
Cartagena is Colombia’s colonial and historic city on the Caribbean coast, which is attracting visitors from all over the world, with it’s collection of 27 Caribbean islands, historic buildings and romantic architecture. This city has some of the best restaurants in the country. Most of them serve fresh seafood, meats and other produce, many of it served in a home coked style meal with delicious flavours passed from generations.
Bogota
Bogota is Colombia’s capital city. Its location is in the Andes mountains range. The city is home to over 10 million people. Its a city of all full of culture, history and surrounded by beautiful mountains.
Bogota is taking the art scene by storm along with it’s history downtown area which is attracting visitors from all over the world.
Medellin
Medellin is the countries second biggest city and often referred to as the city of eternal
spring, due to it’s spring like year round climate. It is is a thriving and big up and coming South American city, with many buildings choosing the city as their business hub. Medellin is an innovative city with a world class public transports system and beautiful public park areas.
San Andres and Providencia
San Andres and Providencia are two Caribbean islands complete with pure white sandy beaches, and crystal clear turquoise waters. The islands are on the Caribbean coral reef and are the perfect place for diving and snorkelling.
Adventure Sports
Colombia is slowly making a name for itself in the adventure sports world, with many cities and towns providing top class adventure sports for locals and visitors. San Gil in Colombia’s Santander department is the countries adventure sports capital. In San Gil visitors can go white water rafting, hiking, cycling, bungee jumping, abseiling, waterfall rappelling, caving and paragliding.

le have been voted some of the happiest in the world for a number of years running and it’s easy to see why. Colombia’s are generally welcoming, helpful people and love interacting with tourists and foreigners.
