Who are these people that steal phones?

Whether traveling or in your hometown, for many that are walking around with a smartphone, the risk of having their phones stolen is real. I’ve been in a situation while traveling where a friend had his phone stolen during a night out. Being a good friend, I helped him try to track down the phone using Find my iPhone. However, due to limited wifi access and transportation options, our search was very short lived and we returned home empty handed.

One student set out with the goal of having someone steal his phone to discover who the thieves are. With that, he pulled back the curtain on what many suspect is a dark underworld or a vast criminal network. Using sophisticated technology, he was able to track the phone and learn some interesting bits about this person.
